Mississippi Puts The Breaks on Methamphetamine Production

In an attempt to curb the crystal meth epidemic in the state of Mississippi, law makers have gone to extremes. As of July 1, 2010 anyone who wants to buy pseudoephedrine (one of the necessary ingredients used to produce methamphetamine) will need a prescription in the state of Mississippi. This is a positive step for a state that is starting to be consumed with this man-made drug, however those that are struggling with a crystal meth addiction need to seek out a drug and alcohol rehab before it’s too late.

The state of Mississippi reported that in 2007 there were 137 meth lab incidents and 46 children that were affected by crystal meth laboratories. These terrifying statistics show how meth is fast becoming the biggest threat to Mississippi.

Crystal meth, ice, crank, crystal, and tweak are all names for methamphetamine, a drug that can be made with household items, a drug that is slowly overtaking communities in Mississippi. Crystal meth addiction can be likened to loosing one’s mind. The person becomes consumed with the drug. Often times spending days at a time awake, “tweaking”. Former meth addicts talk about seeing things that aren’t there, talking to people that don’t exist and picking imaginary bugs off of their skin. These are all side effects of smoking, injecting or snorting crystal meth.

More and more rehabilitation facilities are noticing increasing numbers of crystal meth addicts. One such rehabilitation facility is Narconon Louisiana. Unlike most drug rehabs, Narconon Louisiana does not subscribe to the idea that addiction is a disease. Instead, counselors work one on one with the clients to figure out what problems drugs were a solution for. Once that problem is isolated and handled clients no longer feel the need to resort to drugs like crystal meth.

Outside studies show that Narconon Louisiana maintains a 76% success rate for permanent recovery from drugs and/or alcohol. Another component of the program that contributes to this outstanding statistic is the New Life Detoxification Program.

Clients enroll in several sessions in a dry heat sauna. Paired with some light exercise, the sauna allows the body to get rid of drug residue that has attached to the fatty cells. Often times addicts will cite cravings as being the reason they cannot stay away from drugs or alcohol. Cravings occur when the drug and alcohol residue release into the blood stream and remind the body that the drug or drink is “necessary”. The sauna program allows individuals to detoxify their bodies of this residue and live life craving-free.

Some may think that lawmakers in Mississippi have taken drastic measures to dissuade the production of methamphetamine, however if it is not paired with effective treatment for addiction then most people will find a way around this new law. One of the police officers was doing routine security checks on the businesses located around that exit. He noticed that there were several cars located in front of a restaurant. When he went over to check them out he stumbled upon what he believed to be packaged drugs. The police officer immediately called in for back up and that is when 89 pounds of methamphetamine and 99.6 pounds of cocaine were discovered.
