Atlanta, Georgia Drug Abuse

Filed under: Media Reports — admin @ 11:13 am

According to neighborhoodscout.com Atlanta, Georgia has a population of 420,003 and a crime index of 1 – 100 being the safest.  If you lived in Georgia you would have a 1 in 247 chance of becoming a victim of a violent crime and if you lived in Atlanta, Georgia you would have a 1 in 71 chance of becoming a victim of a violent crime.  The FBI collects information from 17,000 local law enforcements agencies and that is where they get the figures for these statements.  Just recently altanta has had 93 murders, 96 rapes, 2,228 robberies and 3,473 assaults.  For every one thousand resident there are 93 of them that will be a victim.  Atlanta has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes.  According to neighborhoodscout.com Atlanta is number 33 in the top 100 most dangerous cities to live in.

Just in October of 2011 USA today published an article saying pill mill operations in Georgia have been on the rise.  One of the reasons for this is that the nearby states like Florida have ramped up their drug law penalties and the way they regulate the pill mill operations and how they prosecute individuals who run the pain clinic, illegally.  There are pain clinics that are enjoying the profits they are making while they run these clinics so they move to other states when they want to avoid new laws, increased criminal penalties.

Benjamin Von Schuch, a drug defense attorney in Atlanta, said, “The number of pill mills in Atlanta is greatly increasing because so many other states are enhancing their drug enforcement efforts against drug tourists, pain clinic operators and pill mill operations.” Rehabs in Louisiana and other southern states are full of painkiller addicts because of such practices.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation reports a rise that is significant in pill mills, drug shops, and pain clinics in Atlanta strip malls and along interstate highways and all of this is happening because dealers and people from other states like Florida, Tennessee, Ohio, Maryland and Kentucky are looking for new ways to obtain pain pills.  There has also been a 10% increase in prescription pill overdoses in 2010 over 2009 in the state of Georgia.

There are now states that have a database in effect that track drug tourist who have a valid prescription for medication then they go to different states to have the prescription filled more than one time.  Georgia does not have a prescription drug monitoring program in operation until 2013.  Von Schuch said, “The recent increase in pill clinics in Atlanta will probably result in a higher number of drug arrests throughout the state.  These individuals can be charged with a number of drug crimes, including possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to sell or distribute, and even drug trafficking in some cases.  Possession of a controlled substance is a serious felony offense in Georgia a can result in imprisonment ranging anywhere from one to 30 years depending on the schedule the substance is classified in.” Let’s also hope that the individuals who find themselves hooked on these substances get themselves to Atlanta drug rehabs.
