 Although officials have seen a decrease in the amount of crystal meth being produced in small labs throughout the state, officials have noticed an increase in the amount of crystal meth that is being purchased from Mexican Drug Trafficking Organizations.
Central and Southeastern Kentucky have reported the most crystal meth abuse in the state. Most of the crystal meth in this state comes from the Southwest Border, Georgia and North Carolina. Independant traffickers travel to Atlanta and other major cities along the Southwest Border to obtain pound amounts of Mexican produced methamphetamine and smuggle it back into southeastern Kentucky in vehicles.
One of the msot alarming statistics coming out of Kentucky is the amount of children that are abusing crystal meth. 4.4% of 9th graders have admitted to abusing crystal meth at least once in their lives. By the time children reach the 12th grade that percentage almost doubles. 8.1% of 12thg raders have reported they have abused crystal meth at least once in their lives.
In 2007, the Federal government seized 7.8 kilograms of crystal meth. During 2006, 42.4% of the Federally-sentenced defendants in Kentucky committed a drug offense. 25.8% of those drug cases involved methamphetamine. Of the 4,100 methamphetamine offense cases handled by the Kentucky circuit, district and juvenile courts during 2006, a total of 1,188 resulted in a conviction. Additionally, there were 32 children in Kentucky affected by crystal meth labs during 2007.
During 2006, there were 23,058 admissions to drug and alcohol rehabs in the state of Kentucky. Crystal meth addicts accounted for only 776 of these admissions.

 There is a variety of different ingredients that are involved in making crystal meth. One of the reasons why this drug is so dangerous is because it has so many different chemicals. Crystal meth is made up of such things like; draino, battery acid, lye, and sudafed - to name a few. When a person constantly ingests these chemicals several physical side effects will occur. Crystal meth works because it interacts with the dopamine receptors in the brain. The crystal meth "sneaks" into the receptors and "tricks" them to release massive amounts of dopamine. This is the cause of the euphoric feeling that addicts experience when they ingest the drug. However, after someone has abused the drug their body no longer has any dopamine reserves left. It can take years for this reserve to build back up, sometimes never reaching the optimum amount.
Sometimes crystal meth addicts will insist they can quite using the drug at any time. This is highly unlikely and in most cases this is just another attempt to avoid giving up the drug. However, drug rehabs are the only real solution to a crystal meth addiction - the sooner a person enrolls in rehab, the sooner they will be able to live a life free of crystal meth. |
